Effects of Acute Treatment of Vitamin C on Redox and Antioxidative Metabolism in Plasma and Red Blood Cells of Rats

چکیده
Ascorbic acid (Vit C) is a reducing agent that efficiently quenches potentially damaging free radicals. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of high acute dose of Vit C on redox and antioxidative status in blood of rats. Our study included two groups of Wistar albino rats: I – untreated group (control); II – group treated with Vit C (500 mg/kg bw, i.p.). In all cases animals were sacrificed after three days of treatment and blood samples were taken at the day of sacrifice. Concentration of Heinz bodies (HB) was determined in whole blood, while the concentration of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS), as well as, parameters of antioxidative defense system were followed in plasma and red blood cells (RBC). Our results showed that Vit C treatment induced higher levels of peroxynitrites and lipid peroxidation in plasma. In RBC, Vit C induced higher level of HB, GSSG/2 GSH ratio and glutathione peroxidase activity, while decreased glutathione reductase activity. In conclusion, acute high doses of Vit C act as prooxidant and induced oxidative stress that resulted in lipid peroxidation in plasma and hemoglobin oxidation in RBC.

Effect of Supplementation of Diet with Vitamin C on Induction and Consequences of STZ-Diabetes in Rats
OBJECTIVE: Streptozotocin (STZ) destroys the beta cells of pancreas by generation of reactive oxygen species and vitamin C has documented antioxidant properties. This study was designed to evaluate the preventive effect of supplementation of diet by vitamin C on induction of STZ-diabetes and its effect on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism of diabetic rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty male Wis...
متن کاملEffects of histidine and vitamin C on isoproterenol-induced acute myocardial infarction in rats
In the present study, we investigated the effects of histidine and vitamin C (alone or in combination) treatments against isoproterenol (a β-adrenergic receptor agonist)-induced acute myocardial infarction in rats. We used propranolol (a β-adrenergic receptor blocker) to compare the results. Rats were given intraperitoneal injections of histidine (40 mg kg-1) and vitamin C (40 mg kg<...
متن کاملChanges in Biochemical Parameters Related to Lipid Metabolism Following Titanium Treatment in Rat
Titanium salts are widely used in pharmacy and industry as intensely white permanent pigment with good covering power in paints , paper , toothpaste , plastics and food dye s. This ion is a redox-active transition metal and may cause oxidative damages to lipids, proteins and DNA molecules. In spite of abundant literature, questions about the side effects of titanium ions...

The aim of this study was to determine the acute and chronic toxicity of Deltamethrin insecticides and its effect on the activity of brain acetylcholinesterase and serum catalase enzymes and gill and liver tissues of Carassius auratus in the presence of vitamin C. In the acute toxicity test, LC50 of Deltamethrin was calculated by Probit test analysis and the effect of its chronic concentration ...
